Dementia is not a single disease; rather, it is an umbrella term describing a decline in memory, reasoning or other thinking skills. Symptoms grouped under dementia are caused by abnormal brain changes.

Alzheimer's disease is the most common type of dementia followed by frontotemporal degeneration, Lewy body dementia, and vascular dementia.
